As a jewelry studio technician, you will maintain a safe, functional, and clean shop environment. You will provide outstanding customer service to SCAD students and staff/faculty by enforcing studio policies, procedures, and safety measures while demonstrating correct equipment operations. You will assist with training and onboarding new staff, including mentoring student employees, training them on the proper use and care of equipment, and relaying all policies and procedures. Responsibilities include ensuring students safely and efficiently follow all correct operations and equipment processes, managing tool inventory using WebCheckout, and assisting with the setup and execution of class demonstrations/workshops. You will also perform cleaning and light maintenance on studio assets to ensure they are correctly working, reporting all concerns and needed repairs to the manager.

In this position, you will work with students to ensure they possess a strong understanding of proper equipment usage to comply with all safety policies, advise students on basic fabrication issues, and provide hands-on support for the operation of studio equipment. As a technician, your responsibilities will include the execution of daily assignments to ensure tasks are thoroughly completed and areas of concern are promptly communicated with the studio manager, proactively identifying and developing solutions to improve studio functionality, and communicating procedural changes to ensure continuity. You will also administer basic first aid as needed, provide data to the studio manager, and assist with deliveries to unload consumable materials and resources. Additional responsibilities will include participating in special events, attending scheduled staff meetings, and providing backup during high-demand times.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an advanced knowledge of fabrication techniques and machinery, along with strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. They will exhibit an excellent problem-solving ability with critical thinking, time management, and prioritization skills. The candidate must be highly observant to proactively identify potential safety issues.

The candidate should possess proficient skills and knowledge in wax carving/printing, fabrication, enameling, and electrochemical processes. They should also be detail-oriented and highly observant with a strong work ethic and high standards. The capability to troubleshoot technical issues with a commitment to safety protocols in a working environment is required. Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of jewelry-specific equipment is also required.

Minimum Qualifications:      

  • Bachelor’s degree or one year (min.) experience in a related field with a high school diploma
  • Experience working hands on in the jewelry field as a bench jeweler or technician
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites, and 3D modeling software experience

Preferred Qualifications:      

  • Three years (min.) experience as a studio technician or prior experience in a related field (for tech II)
  • Five years (min.) experience as a studio technician or prior experience in a related field (for tech III)
  • Experience in an academic environment

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
