Job Summary

The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), a publicly supported research center within the University of Kentucky (UK), is recruiting a Geologist II as a watershed modeler-GIS geospatial analyst for a 3-year FEMA funded karst flood hazard mapping project. This research project is focused on developing hydrogeologic mapping criteria, compiling new digital geospatial data sets for karst hydrogeology and flood vulnerability maps, and applying or modifying watershed modeling techniques to identify geographic areas in Kentucky with relative higher risks to sinkhole and karst-related flood hazards. Our preference is for an individual with a background in hydrogeology or hydrology, with interest and experience in applying watershed or other surface-water modeling techniques to karst hydrogeological settings. Programming skills are highly desirable, and strong work ethics, ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting, and good verbal and written communication skills are a must. This position is expected to collaborate and communicate effectively with KGS staff, other UK researchers, project stakeholders/sponsors, professionals, and landowners to enable successful completion of the project. This position will publish reports and present findings at professional meetings. Some field work to examine and verify hydrologic characteristics of identified karst flooding areas and features is expected.

Required Education: M.S. in Geosciences (Hydrogeology), Civil Engineering, or Hydrology.

Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Familiarity with karst hydrogeology; ArcGIS Pro and ARC GIS terrain and hydrology modeling applications; MS Office, expertise with Microsoft Excel; experience or demonstrable familiarity with watershed modeling techniques using USGS PRMS or other similar software, demonstrable project management skills; 5+ years of a state issued driver’s license.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

GIS (ArcGIS) technical skills (Raster tools, Spatial Analyst Tools, 3D Analyst Tools, Analysis Tools), Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, training/experience in use of rainfall-runoff modeling techniques and software (e.g. USGS PRMS, Topmodel, HYSIM, others)
