Job Title: Assistant Softball Coach

Institution: Walters State Community College

Campus Location: Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The purpose of this position is to recruit the best student-athletes from across the nation to play softball at Walters State. In the case of a commitment from an incoming student-athlete, this position coordinates the admissions, financial aid, and off-campus housing processes. In the softball program, this position provides guidance and direction to student-athletes in training, both on the softball field and in the weight room and also serves as an academic liaison for student-athletes.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with national and international prospective student-athletes in an effort to recruit them as members of the softball program. Related duties include organizing and managing on-campus showcases and camps designed to evaluate student-athletes. Recruiting responsibility includes traveling to athletic events to evaluate student-athletes. Assists the head coach with in-game strategies.
  • Directs the training of student athletes through batting practices, demonstrations, pitching machines, hitting fungo groundballs and flyballs. Ability to throw batting practice is a crucial requirement of this job. This position will also be responsible for overseeing early morning strength and conditioning program with student-athletes.
  • Provides academic support to student-athletes in order to rectify any missing assignments, lack of attendance, and overall academic progress. Also responsible for monitoring study hall sessions two-four times per week. 
  • Assists with maintaining the softball field to ensure proper function and safety for the players. Includes mowing, edging, watering, seeding, weed eating, as well as any other duties needed at the field. 
  • Manages inventory of all Walters State Softball equipment including softballs, fungo bats, pitching machines, uniforms, practice tops, catching gear, batting helmets, travel bags, radar guns, and video cameras. 
  • Contributes to the maintenance of a social media presence by designing graphics and updating social media platforms.
  • Assists student athletes with placement at four-year universities by maintaining consistent communication with four-year coaches.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree
  • Minimum of 2 years softball coaching experience
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills for interacting with recruits and motivating players
  • Thorough knowledge of softball rules and tactics, and knowledge of the Junior College landscape

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a junior college Assistant Coach with experience recruiting the state of Tennessee

Leadership & Supervisory: The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and direction of up to 25 student-athletes, as well as building a relationship with them prior to their arrival at Walters State. The position operates with limited supervision at times, and most tasks are performed without consultation of others. Resources, policies, or a supervisor are readily available if needed. Work is checked largely for progress towards the completion of objectives.

Environment & Working Conditions: Due to the nature of the position, exposure to extreme heat, humidity, noise, and temperature changes are possible. Occasional exposure to extreme cold during the winter season. Bodily injury could occur, including damage from flying debris or hearing damage from the operation of lawn mowers, pitching machines, edging tools, or weed eaters.

Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays): 

  • Ability to safely operate heavy machinery such as lawnmowers
  • Hours can vary depending on the scope and nature of an event, such as tournaments or games at distant locations.
  • Lifting heavy items is required, such as coolers, softballs, pitching machines, uniform boxes.
  • Working on weekends occurs on a regular basis.
